"We're being pursued by a... just a massive robot!"
―Buzz referencing Emperor Zurg

Buzz Lightyear is the main character and the protagonist of the 2022 Disney/Pixar animated film, Lightyear. He is a colleague and friend of Izzy, Morrison, Warp Darkmatter, Mira and Darby, and an old colleague to Diaz and Alisha, the human companion of Sox.

Background

Personality

Much like his Buzz's toy counterpart, he can feel genuine emotions such as pride, anger, depression, and sadness, much like a regular human in his species, but he is a dutiful ranger with a habit of doing things on his own and makes mission logs to help him focus, and that causes him to make mistakes. For example, Buzz unintentionally crashed the Turnip, however, he was willing to take full responsibility for his actions, to the point that he offered to have himself stripped of his rank. He also had issues with rookies as he felt that rookies and sometime, autopilots, don't help and overcomplicate things.

Physical appearance

Buzz is a young man who has fair skin, blue eyes, brown hair, and a massive chin. Before he and his crew were crash-landed on T'Kani Prime, he wears a custom Space Ranger suit with a laser-like-machete strapped to his back, later, in his first Test flight on hyperspeed propulsion systems powered by crystallic fusion, Buzz wears a custom white test pilot suit with the number one on it, for the Lx-1 ship.

In casual, Buzz's outfit consisted of a Dark jumpsuit with a name tag that says "LIGHTYEAR" and black boots, and for nighttime, he was white and grey t-shirt emblazoned with "PROPERTY OF STAR COMMAND" and grey sweatpants.

Trivia

  • According to Buzz's dog tags, his blood type is O positive.
  • The voice actor for Buzz Lightyear is Chris Evans in the human version, but as for the toy version, he was voiced by Tim Allen.
  • He doesn't get his toy counterpart's identical-looking signature space ranger suit until at the end of the film.
  • Much like his toy counterpart, his helmet is able to go all the way inside his body, which doesn't make any sense as it would take so much space inside the suit for his body.
  • Buzz's present day is 88 years after he caused the ship to crash; for him it was only 19 days before his final 12 year jump. It hits him hard that any friends or family he had back home are now dead; despise this, he managed to make a new life for himself with his new friends and family.
    • In short, Buzz has a literal example of how an out of control ego will eventually leave someone alone.
    • In a dark sense of humor, Buzz could have had a nice life with his generation but his ego and sense of responsibility made him lose sight of things.
      • Adding onto the dark humor is that the correct hyperspace crystal formula would not exist until everyone from his era was dead; which made the effort pointless as the generations born on the planet had no reason to go to earth.
